Mission

For Barbers, By Barbers

Layrite honors the time-tested traditions of our fathers, and their fathers before them. When taking the time to look good wasn’t about vanity, but about preparing yourself to be good at something, and to do good for the world and others.

In other words, why a man looks good is more important than how good he looks.

Like that man, we also take our time. And by doing so, we are able create the kind of high performance products that not only exceed expectations, but continuously reset the bar for traditional men's grooming in the 21st century. It is how we achieve our mission to passionately help people, barbers and communities look good, do good, feel great and Keep It Together everyday.

The year was 1999.

To most, it seemed the barbering trade was breathing its last breath. Nevertheless, Layrite's passionate Founding Barber, Donnie Hawley, was still in hot pursuit of perfecting his clients' haircuts.

His technique was being hindered by the traditional petroleum-based products his patrons wore that wouldn't rinse out.

Never wanting to limit style, yet committed an elevated standard of barbering; Donnie labored to find a solution.

The end result was a water soluble pomade Scientifically Formulated to “Hold Like Wax and Wash Out Like Gel.”

After one of Donnie’s patrons commented that his pomade was the only product that made his hair lay right, a brand was born.

Layrite Men’s Grooming Products have been setting the benchmark of traditional barbering and men’s grooming ever since.

Often imitated but never replicated, our products have become the staple brand used by barbers seeking quality and authenticity the world over.

Interview with Donnie Hawley

Donnie Hawley started Layrite with a simple goal: Bring back the tradition of exceptional quality men’s grooming products, made for today's standards and priced fairly. All the so called “experts” told him it wouldn't work. They told him that barbering was a dying industry. He ignored them.

Why? Because Donnie was fed up with the status quo. He saw opportunity where others only saw impossibility. And he used that energy to dive head first into the hard work required to create something new, and do it well. Our tagline “Keep It Together” is about that drive — a resolve to do better, to perform better, no matter what is going on around you.
